The 2014 Distinguished Alumni Award…Craig Robert Meredith!

The 2014 Distinguished Alumni Award…Craig Robert Meredith!

A friend of Craig's is the Superintendent of Human Resources for the School Board and has known Craig since high school, nominated Craig for the award.   He has been a mentor to Craig.  The letter Craig received came from the Superintendent of Central Unified School District.  His letter said:

"It is with a great deal of pleasure that I am writing to inform you that you were selected as Cetral Unified's Outstanding Alumnus of 2014.

Your story is a great one of overcoming obstacles, choosing the right path, and giving back to your communityin order to better others' lives.  We would like to thank you for being such a great example to our current and former students, and would request your presence...blah blah blah!

They gave him the award at their Scholarship/Awards Presentation Ceremony.  Craig had quite an entourage show up for it.  Of course Claire, his brothers Chip and Stephen and his girlfriend Marissa, Ernie and Linda (Claire’s mom and dad), Kim, a partner at his law firm and us.  The speaker gave such a warm welcome to Craig, even a hug!  Craig did a good job with his speech, kept it brief but hit upon some important points about the choices you make and how if you get a good education someone who was poor and homeless can become a lawyer.  This is a brief synopsis of his speech but you get the gist!

Saturday night was Stephen’s graduation party.  Craig, Claire and Chip did a great job decorating the back yard.  Ernie was storing a boat in the back yard so they used that as the theme…nautical!  The boat was the “thirst aid station”, on the dessert table Claire had “live bait…gummy worms”, gold fish and more cute signs and snacks!  There were plenty of refreshments to go around.

Everyone was dressed in nautical clothes and Ted’s hat was the hit of the party!  Stephen looked really “cool” in his jacket that he found on line by accident, looking up summer work clothes.  He remembered it and went ordered it.  It had anchors all over it…it was a one time wear, very thin material!  Here are only a few of the guests!

Craig had a “Taco Truck” come to the house for two hours.  They had the best street tacos.  The corn tortillas were home made and delicious!  The taco truck was a big hit and very cute!

They had between 50 and 60 friends at the party. The young children and us older adults left about nine so the young adults could party on!  Right before we left Stephen gave a speech.  This is Craig watching Stephen!  I think his heart was bursting with pride!

On Sunday Sophie had her one-year check up appointment to get her ready for Canada!  After her appointment she got to go over and play with Sophia!  I think she was stressed from being at the vet and then Sophia is so big and such a puppy, she was running from Sophia instead of playing as she normally does so we took her home!

On Monday morning we drove north to Atwater, CA.  Our friends Billy and Vicky Whited live there so we had dinner and some time to visit.  On Tuesday we went north and east.  We are in Emigrant Gap area, about 25 miles west of Truckee.   The campground is working on the water system so we are camped in an area with electric only.  We are at 5800 feet elevation with lots of pine trees and boulders!  There are only a couple campers here so it’s very peaceful.  In the sun it is in the 90’s each day but you are almost chilly in the shade!  It has a pretty lake that is full of trout!

Yesterday we drove to Truckee to look around and have lunch.  It’s a nice little town right on the Truckee River.  On the way there we passed Donner Lake and there is still snow on the mountains!

From here we go east to Reno, only about 70 miles from here, a quick drive!

Cool air, water and tall beautiful trees..."Ain't Life Grand!"
