Yesterday we went to Ethel M's chocolate factory in Las Vegas! They have realllllly great chocolate. Everything is freshly made with no wax or other preservatives. We left there and headed to our friend's David and Debbie Hawkins for dinner. Max was invited and we all had a great dinner and an enjoyable evening.
This morning we left Las Vegas and headed to Fresno via Bakersfield. We got on the road were amazed at the snow in the Red Rock Mountains. When we went to the Hawkins' yesterday there was no snow and overnight it snowed quite a bit. We continued on and the skies were looking very dark and rainy. We knew there was a storm near San Francisco so we decided to call the road condition number to see if Highway 58 from Barstow to Bakersfield was open. The recording indicated there was no problem at this time so we took off on 58. When we got to Mojave it was raining pretty hard. We went over the Tehachapi mountain range and the temperature kept dropping. The summit is approximately 4,000 feet and we drove through a bit of sleet and fog. Conditions weren't great but still passable so we carried on and arrived in Bakersfield at 3:00. Watching the news at 5:00 we found that 58 was now closed because of snow! Around 6:00 they closed the Grapevine! We were very happy to be settled on this side of the mountain and although it's still raining we are toasty warm and not snowed in! Tomorrow we should be able to get to Fresno!
Making it safely over the mountains..."Ain't Life Grand!"
